Photographing red rhododendrons

I find it hard to take a good photo of red rhododendrons. I guess I’m usually trying in sunlight and that doesn’t seem to give great results. However this week’s dull overcast days are proving better and there are lots of late reds in flower including R griersonianum which is orangey red and R Tally Ho close by at the entrance to the garden.

I don’t know if it is relevant to photography or not but I have found that when viewing red rhododendrons the most pleasing effect is achieved by having the plant between yourself and the sun.
