New growth

Although it is still very dry and we could do with some heavy rain, growth this year seems exceptional. New growth provides a second show of colour and interest through the garden during the summer months but makes us wonder about the eventual size of some rhododendrons.

Rhododendron suoilenhense has put on at least a foot of growth and is obviously going to be tall, it’s from the China/ Vietnam border and is a fairly recent introduction. In contrast, Rhododendron tsariense x proteoides is much neater and both surfaces of the new growth are covered in ginger indumentum.
